A quick mockup.

As we plan out how to bring the original farmhouse and modern addition together, we're looking at a few exterior things:

  1. Paint colors (update to contemporary palette)
  2. Windows (replace all existing vinyl windows with contemporary black designs)
  3. Front porch (update railings to more contemporary style)
  4. Front door (replace with a contemporary style solid wood)
  5. Soffits (replace white beadboard with unpainted/stained/natural wood planks)
Intentionally though not our style, the previous owners chose to make the modern addition about as starkly different from the farmhouse to which it was attached as possible. So when they went to sell it (and we bought it), the poor house had sat on the market for six months. They lost $50k from their original asking price in the process. Score! That won't be the case though when it's time for us to put it on the market.

To quickly get a feel for a new exterior color scheme, I mocked up the front of our house in Photoshop.

The trim is black, straight up. The house color is Valspar 7006-21 Hailstorm Gray from one of our (or at least my) favorite Valspar color palettes.

Right now of course the whole house (farmhouse and addition) are a light-ish grey. With white trim. Cute, but boring.

We painted the front door dark grey a while ago (it was stark white like all the trim), then black last summer. Contrast.

More to come as we continue to mockup our thoughts for those other updates: windows, porch, front door (the one in the paint mockup is a placeholder), and soffits.
